How effective is public transport in Rome?

The Metrebus Transport Network is divided into six concentric travel zones that cover the entire Lazio Region.

  • Metrebus Zone B and C, include the Metropolitan City of Rome
  • Metrebus Zone D, E and F, include the Lazio Region.

How much does it cost the public transport in Rome Capital city and the Metropolitan City of Rome?

Public transportation in Rome is very cheap, probably the most inexpensive in Europe. Metrebus tickets and passes for zone A only allow the use of public transport in Rome Capital City, within which there are all the sites commonly known to tourists. To the current date, a single ticket lasting 100 min. (B.I.T.) cost 1.50 euros. By purchasing a B.I.T., it is possible to Hop on Hop off any means of transport of the Capital City of Rome, with the following limitations:
  • – just one ride on the subway
  • – only one pass through the metro turnstiles.
Children under 10yo travel for free on the bus, metro, and trams in Rome and have discounts on regional trains. Instead, if you like to explore the Metropolitan City of Rome or the Lazio Region, there is a large selection of tickets and passes that allow using public transport within Rome Capital City and all the locations included in the perimeter of the chosen area. Once defined your travel zone and purchased your ticket, you can hop on hop off trams, bus, metro, and regional trains using the same ticket or transport card.

Some passes might also have spaces for data, such as your name or the date of birth.

Always remember to validate your ticket. If you travel without a validated ticket, you risk getting a fine from ticket inspectors.

Where to buy public transport tickets in Rome?

Here is where you can buy Metrebus tickets and cards:

Note:
(N1) – Must be validated at the beginning of the journey and is valid until midnight of the last day of validity for unlimited trips.
(N2) – Is valid for 100 minutes from validation. It allows you for a single trip on metro/train urban route, even using different lines, but without passing through the turnstiles.
(N3) – Is valid for a limited amount of hours from the first validation.

Authorized Points of sale are usually Tobacco shops and newspaper kiosks close to the train stations and automatic machines at Metro stations in Rome.

If you are planning for a long staying, look for a Metrebus card, a very inexpensive montly or annual pass. Metrebus card is a personal card with a photo of the subscriber and an electronic chip containing personal data of the holder, type of purchased ticket, expiry date and validity.

You can purchase a train ticket to reach a destination in the Metropolitan City of Rome or even in Italy, using the automatic machine available at the train stations or online.

Where can I validate my transport ticket in Rome?

Rome public transport tickets must be purchased in advance and validated before boarding.

  • – On bus or tram in Rome, you can stamp your ticket on board.
  • – On Metro in Rome, you need to stamp tickets at the turnstile. Be careful to retrieve it from the top of the machine before going through the gate.
  • – On a train, you need to stamp your ticket in the validation machine before boarding.

According to the station, stamping machines are available at the train station or the beginning of the platforms.

In case of malfunction of the ticket validator you can contact the ticket office or the conductor when boarding.

Public transport in Rome vs. Hop on Hop off bus

When visiting a new city, the option of using a Hop on Hop off bus is very common.
